Godefroy, Frédéric, Dictionnaire de l'ancienne langue française et de tous ses dialectes du IXe au XVe siècle (1881) (R:Godefroy)

This template may be used in "References" sections and on talk pages to cite Frédéric Godefroy's work Dictionnaire de l'ancienne langue française et de tous ses dialectes du IXe au XVe siècle (Dictionary of the Old French Language and All Its Dialects from the 9th to the 15th Century, 1880–1902, 10 volumes). Despite the title, the dictionary includes citations up to and beyond 1600. It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work.

The template is mainly used in Old French entries, but can be used for other languages, such as to support the etymology of a modern French or modern English word.

The dictionary is written in French, and omits definitions where the old and modern French words are the same or very similar. For example, it does not define aigle to mean "eagle", as the reader is expected to assume that this sense of the Old French word is the same as in modern French. In these cases, the supplement, which is almost as large as the main dictionary, usually (but not always) lists the modern meaning.

If citing from both the main dictionary and the supplement (complément), use the template twice. This is uncommon, but see engin for an example.

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |sup= or |supplement= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the supplement (complément) to the dictionary, specify |sup=1 or |sup=yes. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the main dictionary.
  • |volume= – the volume number cited in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=X.
  • |1= or |entry= – the entry in the work cited. If this is not specified, the template uses the name of the Wikipedia entry.
  • |num= – where an entry (for example, aiglantin) has more than one etymology, the dictionary places an Arabic numeral in front of each instance of the entry with a distinct etymology. Use this parameter to specify this number, for example, |num=1.
  • |pos= or |part of speech= – the part of speech and, where applicable, the gender of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages= – the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) quoted from, from |column=1 to |column=3. If quoting from all three columns, omit this parameter.
  • |3=, |gloss=, |text=, or |passage= – a gloss, or a passage to be quoted.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
